Puerto Vallarta, March 2006 with Cal and Juanita

Well, looks like Puerto Vallarta might be an annual trip. We both love it and since we purchased a timeshare we can plan to go down there or other places once a year. This time we decided to invite Doug’s dad Cal and his girlfriend Juanita to join us. We booked Posada de Roger in Old Town Puerto Vallarta again for a few days prior to our move to or timeshare at the Mayan Palace at the Marina. We arrived on a Thursday and met Cal and Juanita at the airport where they had flown in from Portland an hour or so before us. When we got there they were sitting at a table with a stranger, and when we approached they introduced him to us. They had gotten sucked in by the Time Share vultures who are everywhere! They had already booked us for the “free” breakfast the next day, as well as a free tour. We left the airport and took a taxi to our hotel. After getting settled we walked over to the beach to get a bite to eat. It was fun to show Cal and Juanita some of the favorite places we have found over the last couple years. In the morning we were picked up at our hotel and taken to the Mayan Palace, where we were already owners. Of course there is always a bigger and better option, whether it is buying more weeks or into a newer plan. They separated us right away from Cal and Juanita and put on the pressure. We held fast that we were not going to upgrade, so after getting more sales people involved they finally let us go, although they were somewhat nasty about it. We found Cal and Juanita and made our way back downtown. We took a bus down to Mismaloya Bay and spent time on the beach just watching people. Juanita and I got pedicures at the beach spa, while the guys had their beers and watched all the action. Of course we were greeted by the resident Iguana again. That evening we went back to the Malecon which was alive with street performers. One thing we found interesting was a guy on the beach stacking rocks, end to end. He was able to stack several stacks 4-5 rocks high without them falling. We had seen this before and it was really interesting. Also, every night at 9pm they have fireworks so we were able to enjoy that too. We ate again at Ay Caramba which is up on hill in a residential neighborhood and has an excellent view of the city. Be sure to time your visit to include the sunset which is spectacular. On Sunday as we were waiting for our taxi to take us to our timeshare at the Marina, I missed a step and fell hard on the concrete floor of the hotel. I immediately had severe ribcage pain which took my breath away. We moved over to our timeshare and got settled in, although at this point I wasn’t much help. The Mayan is beautiful with the pools and beautiful grounds. We walked around awhile then settled down at the pool. That evening we walked over to the Marina and had dinner at Victor’s Place. The food is great and the atmosphere is fun. All drinks include a free shot of tequila and owner Victor will make his way to the tables and have a shot with you. In the morning we headed back to the Marina again for breakfast. I had not slept well at all and was still in severe pain from my fall so I called my insurance and found that the Amerimed Hospital was on my plan. Coincidently it was right at the entrance to the Marina so we walked there. They did Xrays and determined that it was probably just bruised internally. One day we rode a bus north and went to the little town of Sayulita which is a little fishing village with incredible waves for surfing. We walked through the village then went to the beach to have lunch. It was fun to watch the surfers. Although we went back to downtown Puerto Vallarta a few more times it was fun to try the restaurants at the Marina, and the hotel. One night the hotel put on a Hawaiian Luau which was entertaining and the food was great. On Sunday it was time to leave. Although we have been here before I don’t think we will ever tire of the weather, the beautiful sites, and the culture and atmosphere. I want to start planning again right now for next year!
